The City Attorney is appointed by and reports directly to the City Council and serves as the Legal Advisor to the City Council, Planning Commission, City Manager, and all City departments, and represents the City and/or directs all litigation involving the City. Currently the City Attorney’s responsibilities are handled through a contractual agreement with the legal firm of Jones & Mayer.
Legal Services
Primary duties of the City Attorney include:
- Drafting and/or reviewing all ordinances and resolutions of the City to ensure constitutionality and harmony with existing laws and reviewing all contracts and agreements prior to execution.
- Rendering opinions concerning City policies and procedures based on interpretation of State, County, and City laws.
- Litigating in the defense of the City’s actions or to limit the City’s liability exposure.
- Engaging and monitoring legal services provided by special counsel on an as-needed basis.
PUBLIC SERVICE GOAL: To provide legal services and guidance to ensure that all City functions and actions taken are performed on a sound, legal basis.
