In accordance with Gardena Municipal Code Section 8.64, it is the duty of the owner, agent of the owner, lessee or occupant or person in possession of any property, building or structure to maintain it free of public nuisances.

The Public Works Department has responsibility for abating all public nuisance violations related to weeds. When the City reasonably believes a public nuisance exists, Public Works initiates an abatement proceeding which may result in all fees expended in the abatement of the nuisance to be recorded with the Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office as a debt to the City.

Weed abatement proceedings may result if any one of the following conditions exists on any property located in the city.

  • Overgrowth of vegetation or accumulation of debris so as to constitute a fire or health hazard, harbor rats or other vermin, be dangerous to public health, safety or welfare, or have a tendency to depreciate property values of surrounding properties; or
  • Overgrowth of weeds or grasses on a property exceeding 12 inches in height.
